Simpler solution.  Buy a hardtop.  Put it on the car.  Put canoe brackets 
on the hardtop.  Tie the front and rear of the canoe to the bumpers.  All 
the hardtop has to do is support 40 pounds or whatever the canoe weighs; 
should be easy.
