Since I've gotten the rebuilt engine back, I've noticed that it will
sometimes run on when I turn the key off, and make this wheezing,
death-rattle sound as it does. The run-on lasts about three seconds
when it happens. Nothing's changed with the engine partswise since
before the rebuild with the exception of the addition of a Piper 270
cam. The pollution control has been gone since I've owned the car.
It doesn't have an anti run-on valve, but I don't think the '72 model
had it anyway.
The engine has about 1200 miles on it since the rebuild. I'm going
back in tomorrow to adjust the valves, re-torque the head gasket,
adjust the timing, replace the plugs, colourtune the mixture, and
change the oil again, so I'll let you know if any of those were out
of whack.
What is the usual cause of run-on? I've been running 87 octane gas
since I've owned it with no problems, since the compression ratio is
so low. Could the full rebuild have tightened things up enough that
I need to go to a better grade of gasoline?
