I have to disagree with you Mike. I have a '90 Mazda Protogé SE (has the 1.8
SOHC 16V, not the DOHC like the Miatas and DX Protogés) that I bought used in
November, 1993 with 36,000 miles on it. I currently have 121,000 miles on it,
and at the most recent inspection (4/98), it passed with flying colors,
returned no codes from doing an engine diagnostic. Unless some work was done
before I bought it, it has needed absolutely nothing regarding the fuel system,
save for an oxygen sensor, since new. I've also only replaced only
"consumable" items, i.e.: tune up parts, brakes, tires, etc... IMHO, it is
every bit as good a car as the '89 Toyota Corolla my wife and I traded this
past winter with 176,000 miles on it. True, my Mazda has neither the
character, nor the appeal of an LBC, but it is truly dependable transportation,
helping me to avoid car payments a bit longer to save for my B. It also turns
30+MPG in town still. :^)
