They are High intensity discharge lamps.  They work by sending a controlled
arc - spark if you will between two electrodes - no filament.  Thats why the
light looks similar to the hue cast by a arc welder.  Halogens and tungsten
bulbs heat up an element until it glows - in a sealed gas environment.  You
will be seeing more and more of the HID types in the future.
