Sorry about the windscreen, Chris.  Some auto glass shops can repair chips 
and maybe small cracks at a greatly reduced price.  Take it to one and let 
them look at it.  Most insurance companies will even waive the deductible if 
you can repair, rather than replace, the windscreen.  (Of course, you have to 
call it a windshield, or they won't know what you're talking about.)

This brings to mind that we are driving some very small cars that are not 
very visible.  Please drive defensively.  Leave as much room as you can in 
front of you, without allowing anyone else to fill in the space, and keep 
your eyes open all the time.  Big trucks can't see you, and big SUV drivers 
don't seem to care!
