I have the same problems with mechanics here in Australia. At least the ones
I've been to over the years. With perhaps two notable exceptions over 12yrs
of ownership. My worst experience has been with my local mechanic before I
started doing work on the MGA myself. Timing was all over the place, no oil
in the gearbox, polished expensive carb rebuild but set to starting position
(!) and not tuned - ran like an absolute dog - I can't remember all the
rest, but now I won't let a mechanic touch the car for a general service. I
only get them to do stuff I either can't do because I don't have the tools,
or simply don't want to do due to time restrictions. Informed DIY is best I
think no matter how slow the progress is. If you can afford the luxury of
time, then do the work yourself, that way at least you know it's been done,
and most likely the right way with a little help from the list!

OT - I was once out fishing and my mate hooked into this nice 10lb
Australian Salmon (Kahawai for the Kiwi's out there). It was splashing
around, making a huge ruckus at the base of the Wharf. I ran off to get the
gaff I'd left down the other end of the wharf, and maybe another 3-4 minutes
passed until I came back. All the time I was gone this little 10-12yr old
kid and his Dad were watching my friend and the fish. When I was leaning
over the Wharf to try and gaff the fish, the little kid came out with it -
"Gee Dad, you know there's a Fish down there!..". lol! I laughed so bloody
hard I dropped the gaff into the water, and my mate had to sit down to stop
from falling off the Wharf from sheer laughter! <G> Moral of the story. Some
people are just plain slow. <G>
