The gap slips, points burn out, condensers go bad. I have never tried the 
ignitors (or whatever they are called). All I know is they are an expensive 
item to replace.

For all the problems I have had with points, they are easy to replace and 
very cheap. They usually last until I decide to do a routine tuneup every 
year or two, or 6-8k miles. They would probably last a lot longer but I 
need a sure start in the sub-zero Montana winters. Points, rotor, and 
condensor are under $10, cheap enough to keep a spare set in stock.
