At least consider rebuilding it yourself.  They are pretty easy if they
aren't too badly torn up. All you need is a basic tool kit, a Haynes
manual, and a vise and a hammer if you are careful, but a press is
helpful, plus patience and a clean place to work.  Kits with a layshaft,
bearings, seals, gaskets and syncros are about $160 from VB, but you
might need some other parts, so take it apart and inspect it before you
buy anything.  If the laygear is trashed they are about $400, so it can
get expensive!  If 3-4 shifting is bad you might have a broken syncro
(cheap) or a broken hub or fork (more expensive).

I've done three now, but they were all in decent shape prior to the
rebuild.

Alternatively, check the classifieds on http://www.mgcars.org.uk/ and
other sites.  John Twist at http://www.universitymotorsltd.com also is a
good option for bench rebuilding, his price starts at $450.
