Here is my take on the shifter..  It is a late full syncro tranny.  The cover 
has
been moved back a bit and the gap it left has been covered up with huh..
Something.. Someone has fitted the early shift lever to it.  You can see this by
the three bolts holding down the early pieces and the crook in the lever.  The
early tranny had these pieces held in by a circlip.  You need to get the correct
shifter and related parts.  With the late trannys shifter being a few inches
further back installing the carpet kit gets weird.  A late kit wont work.  You
need the early kit.  The tunnel piece needs to be fitted back a bit to match the
shifter.  I had to trim a few inches off the the back of the tunnel piece and
make up a piece to fill in the gap it left at the front. The fit is still a
little sloppy and some carpet padding in the right places help it to look 
smooth.
