Quite a few anti-virus options for win98 here:
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=win98+anti+virus&btnG=Google+Search&meta=

Can't comment on any of them, except to say that Norton is pretty
diabolical, causing failure during shut-down which means the OS wants to a
disc check everytime I boot up which is a pain.

Personally I would *never* upgrade an operating system unless I could afford
to lose everything on the disc. Even then a new OS is likely to be more
resource-hungry, meaning that hardware which may have run adequately with
the old OS may run like a dog with the new. If I really do have to upgrade
then I buy a new machine with everything on it and do a controlled transfer
of data from the old to the new, which is usually not a five-minute process.
For that reason I have only just updated from 98 to XP.

These days many machines are being sold with XP but are advertised as 'Vista
ready', which means you have to do the upgrade. I'd also steer clear of
that, new Operating Systems always have problems, I wouldn't bother with
Vista unless I could delay buying a machine until it came with Service Pack
1 already installed.

Whatever you do, you will almost certainly need a firewall as well as
anti-virus.
