There are teflon liners specifically made for this, available a rod shops
and 4X4 outfitters. It is sold in rolls and has lips built in to keep the
strips in placebetween the spring leaves. I think it's called EZ-glide or
EZ-ride or something like that.

I'd use care in removing spring leaves - unless you're never going to haul
anything. I took a couple leaves out of mine and lost a lot of load
capacity. Springs eventually went flat one one side and had to be replaced.
I believe the estimable Mr Adler has a factory bulletin on the proper way to
do this, it involves shortening some of the remaining leaves to preserve the
spring action.
