Charles - Hope you've resolved your starting problem by now. The way you
described it, sounded like an actual starter engagement problem which there
were plenty of good suggestions for fixing it. But, if the engine is
actually turning over and turning over faster than normal then it could be a
compression problem. I had a 350 fresh rebuild I put in a Vette recently
that was initially running perfect. But after changing over the carburetor
and fuel feed lines I washed the oil from the cylinder walls with raw fuel I
was pumping through it. It has chrome rings and of course they hadn't seated
yet. When I tried starting it the engine wouldn't fire and of course turned
over very fast due to very little compression. Basically I had the equivalent
of an engine with worn rings. So I put close to 1/2 qt. oil in the
carburetor while turning it over and the compression came up. I removed the
plugs, cleaned them and it fired up. (Cleaned the plugs a couple more times
after that.) The rings have seated and it runs fine now. Anyway I'd check
the compression if in fact the engine is turning over and all other things
are correct.
