I just rebuilt the carb (Rochester) in my '49 with a '53 253 and
it ran great. There my be a re-jetting that would help but it should
run ok if everything is new and within spec.
I did have a problem changing spark plug wires. One wasn't seated
correctly and my coil is bad (known problem). It wouldn't start
at all till I checked the spark at each plug and cleaned the
terminals on the coil.
Check with Mile High Classic 303-722-7560 (used to be Blairs)
They most likely can help you out.
