This discussion occurred a while ago on the list & was confirmed that the
running (parking) lights were correctly wired to go out when the headlights
came on.  It was summarized that in later years, autos were wired to keep
the running lights on when the headlights were turned on, in order to help
distinguish oncoming cars from motorcycles when one headlight was burned
out.
