a few things come to mind...

The crank was cross drilled during a rebuild. Was it possibly done during
your last rebuild? My 948 race crank has cross-drilled journals.

the number plate is from a different engine (unlikely)

You can tell early blocks from later ones by the thickness of the flange at
the lip where the oil pan bolts on. There is no mistaking the two. The
other possibility of course is that you got an earlier crank in a later
block.

If you had the pan off, you could see if you can read any of the casting
numbers, but I know you just got that thing back together.

I'm not an expert on these cranks, but all I've heard is that the
cross-drilling is unique to the EN40B. Turns out I have a 1275 that meets
all the criteria, that's why I was trying to find out more myself.
