Jim,
Since the strap is essentially a figure-8 with the crane hook in the center
with both ends attached to it as well as the middle of the strap passing
through it, whenever I want to adjust the angle I lift the front of the
engine or the back of the trans and the middle of the strap slides neatly
through the hook with just enough resistance to stay put when I let go. It
does make a difference which way the crossover in the middle happens as to
whether the engine tends to lean sideways as you do it or not...
