Agree with Jeff that some of the 'extra' circuitry of the '74 could 
be at fault.  In my 74.5, there is a multi-pin plug in the wiring 
related to the starting process, behind the glove box near the 
heater, and the plug goes into a socket in a small interface box.  In 
my case, I pulled out that plug and reinserted it a couple of times, 
and the solenoid started clicking again.  It was probably slightly 
corroded or loose....

Yes, if you really do have to swap out the starter you can do it 
yourself-- just a bolt-on as they say.  Remove your air cleaner 
housing to get a little more room, and maybe a helper to hold a 
wrench topside as you tighten the mounting bolts from below the 
car.  Of course disconnect a battery terminal when you are doing 
this, and then check the cable connections down to the solenoid.
