But then all the Brit-car enthusiasts go around talking about how the
Datsuns never compared very well to the Triumphs and MGBs. No offense meant
to the Brit-car enthusiasts on this list, BTW. They know better.

So what's fair, anyway? Would it be "fair" to pit a 2000 against a 2500cc
TR6 with IRS?

Actually, that's kind of a trick question, because a 96-hp 1600 at 2000 lbs
is probably a fair competitor to a 100-hp 2138cc TR4 at 2200 lbs, except for
the torque advantage of the larger displacement.

The point is that even a TR6, with 2500cc, 6 cylinders and 2400 lbs was
hard-pressed to keep up with a 2000 (even with SU's, let alone Mikunis). The
British simply didn't have anything that could compete with the 2000 at
anything close to the price. A Lotus Elan could out-accelerate it (barely)
and out-handle it (by a bunch), but it also cost over $5100 in 1970.
