Make sure that you verify that the gauge is reading correctly. It is not  
uncommon for them to read 20 or more degrees off. Sludge build up in the rad 
and  
water passages of the block is one of the biggest culprits for overheating  
problems on 40+ year old engines. The other suggestions regarding checking  the 
engines state of tune is obviously the first thing to look at.
