Mark, I was surprised to not see an answer to this one (maybe I just wasn't
looking hard enough?) but in case you're still looking for it, yes you do need
to pull the tunnel, once you do the filler plug is clearly visible.

Subject: Gearbox filler plug?

Hi all - I have a '79 1500 with overdrive. I was driving home today
from work, running just over 3000 at about 65 mph, cruising very
nicely. All of a sudden the car began bucking. As I was pulling off, I
realized that the overdrive was disengaging/reengaging. I was near
home, and drove the rest of the way with the od switched off. No
further problems. When I invetigated, it looks like the drain plug is
backed out and leaking oil. I presume I can tighten it OK, but I can't
see the filler/level plug. Neither of the manuals I have shows a
picture from far enough back so I can locate it. Do I have tp pull the
tunnel, or can I get to it from the engine bay or underneath?

The car is cooling right now, but I'd like to get to this today. Any
help would be appreciated.

Regards,

Mark Gardner
