Ed,

Go to your local auto parts store and purchanse a 1 gal. carb cleaning
bucket. It's basically a paint can with a parts basket and about 3 qts. of
carb cleaner. Overhaul one carb at at time--you won't be inclined to mix
parts and you'll have the other as a reference for reassembly--and soak the
major parts for about 24 hours. They'll come out clean and gunk free. This
gallon bucket cleaner is much safer than gasoline.
