You may want to check what type of thermostat (Winter, Summer, Normal) you have 
in the car.  I have a summer thermostat in my Spit (due to hot summers in 
Alabama) and my temp gauge reads much like you described on moderate 
temperature days (80-85 F ambient).  When the car had a "Normal" thermostat the 
temp gauge ran around the half way point on moderate days but jumped up quickly 
on those HOT days.
