As water is known to boil at 212 degrees farenheit at sea level, you could
always test by immersing the sending unit in boiling water and see if it
reads 212 degrees.  I dont know what you would do if you don't live by the
ocean however.  :-)

Seriously, I have the same problem.  I drove my TR3 70 miles on sunday, and
the temperature guage never went over 110 (outside temps in the low 30's).
 (You can imagine that the idle was a little rough.)  It always runs cool,
except if I sit at idle on a 70+ degree day, when it will get to 180 or 190.
 I know the guage works, because when my fan pulley broke, the guage hit 230
as I started to see a little steam.  I'm going to pull it apart this weekend.
 I expect to find either no thermostat, or a frozen-open thermostat, and
possibly a blocked by-pass hose.  During the summer, the cool running was
fine, and a welcome change from my other 3 which always ran hot.  However, in
a side curtain car, a little heat would be welcome.
