It's been a while since I had the beast apart but as I remember it you have to 
pull the
tranny.  The portion with the speeedo gear  must be removed in order to put in 
the new gear
and have it mate with the gear on the main grearbox drive shaft.  Sorry to be 
the bearer of
good news.
