Uh, isn't that how an auction is SUPPOSED to work? I can just imagine 
attending an auction at Sotheby's or Christie's, or Barratt-Jackson or Kruse 
or even Billy Bob's Auction Barn:

"Attention bidders: the auction on lot #14a will end in ten minutes, but 
bidding is now closed."

Huh?
