FWIW -- Volkswagen vans have one or two batteries inside the vehicle. Mine
has 2 with one under the passenger seat and the other under the rear seat.
As it is a camper there is a lot of charging going on during driving. There
is no venting to the outside. I have never heard (Vanagon list and other
owners I know) of fumes being a problem... there are even ignition sources
present inside the vehicle -- the LP refrigerator & stove. Admittedly it is
a larger interior volume than a pick-up.
