Hi Chris
I have had concurrently Identical engined cars with SU's on one and
Strombergs on the other. The Strombergs were in my opinion the better carb.
They seemed to be more responsive in acceleration, more economical and I
think they stayed "in tune" longer than the SU's.
There are 2 drawbacks to the Strombergs as far as I am concerned,
1 There are not so many needle choices for tweaking the tuning if you are
going to fit free flow (K&N style) filters.
2 If the diaphragm splits the car will at best run rough and at worst stop
running, a split can however be "get you home" repaired with insulation
tape, or as I do throw a pair of diaphragms in the glove box and be
confident that the ones in the carb now become indestructible!

In their favour the Strombergs are much easier to adjust the float level
than the SU's and I know two people who rebuilt their SU's fitted new float
valves and one carb continually flooded, if you stopped the fuel flowing out
the jet so the float could rise high enough the fuel cut off. In the end I
found small washers (as per the instructions) to adjust the float valves and
cured the flooding (I guess it would be less annoying if they included them
in the packet). On the Stromberg you just bend the tab a little bit!

Recommended upgrade:- Superflex Polyurethane suspension bushes! NFI etc but
satisfied customer.

Graham.
