Bench bleeding is priming the pump, so to speak.  It means getting brake
fluid into the cylinder bore while the cylinder is still out of the car. 
Sometimes the air pocket in the cylinder can be resistant to allowing the
fluid in.  Although not manditory, I found that filling a reservoir on the
car and then crawling down in the footwell to wiggle and waggle the break
pedal by hand to be somewhat annoying.

On the other hand, I once bench bled a master cylinder for my Mustang and
the cylinder shot a short spurt of brake fluid that arced out onto the
middle of my hood.  Fortunately it was only a Mustang (daily drive) and the
blemish was barely noticeable.  So take care.
