On the issue of which 4A had dual exhausts and which had single.
On initial launch, the 4A had dual tailpipes for all markets. These proved
troublesome and the system was modified to a single pipe system which cured
the probs. However, there was an uproar from US dealers. They'd already
griped about the demise of the 3A and IRS being inferior to a beam axle on
the TR4, so this time it was exhaust set ups. The twin outlets were retained
for US spec cars for about a year and it became known as a type 409
exhaust - 409 being the production build code. 409 cars conrtinued in
production until about Sept/Oct '66 and then went to a single pipe set up
for all markets. The factory even stopped servicing the 409 pipe arrangement
through Spares Division and everyone got a single pipe, whether they liked
it or not. Changing the parts books with illustrations to the revised layout
took a while (not unusual) but the 4A was coming to the end of its life by
then anyway. Non genuine exhaust suppliers continued offering the earlier
system on aesthetics.
