You loosen the drivers side (left side) motor mount and jack the engine 
up a bit with a 2x4 or such between the jack and the oil pan.  Doesn't 
take much but I have never been able to get a stock belt on there w/o it.

I also carry a length of nylon rope and an 'emergency belt' in case I 
lose the belt along the road somewhere.  The trick of turning the wheel 
to open this space up a bit only works on TR3s.
