Here is a webpage with lots of info including suppliers of R&P kits and tips
for rebuilding the original unit:

http://iai.eivd.ch/users/fwi/cars/tech_talk/steering_frame.htm

Sorry, I can't help you with a definitive opinion. I converted to R&P partly
out of necessity as my steering system was trashed beyond repair.
It was expensive.
It was easy to install.
It's well designed.
It works great, although I have no comparison point as I've never driven a
stock TR3.
The few I've talked to who have converted love it. One person said it was
like converting to power steering. (good luck finding someone who has just
spent close to $1,000 to admit it's not good! [grin])

On the other hand, those who have rebuilt the existing system say that it
works great, too.
Then there are the tens of thousands of owners who have non-rebuilt original
systems that don't have any complaints about their steering, either.

Good luck on your decision.

As I start to put my TR3A back together this fall, I wonder if converting
the
steering to rack & pinion is worth the effort and who makes conversion kits?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
