Rats! I had sort of assumed that the H lifters were just using some sort
of leaky non-return valve that let them take up the slack. That would
have explained why I was told that they would give a "soft" lift and
would negatively impact engine power. If the system is more complicated
than that, then there is no hope. Anyway, I'm using an alloy cover, so
it's not so bad.

It would be a major operation at best.  Hydraulic lifters need a direct
supply of pressurized oil, and there are no such oil holes in the TR
blocks.

Next you'll be wanting a Triumph that doesn't leak oil !
