Hello list: How can I determine if an electronic ignition system (brand unknown) has failed? I ask this because I am once again having difficulty starting the '74 Midget. Starter is turning the motor

I run electronic ignition and have had a unit go bad. I don't think you'd get even a backfire it your module went bad. Get a Bentley workshop manual or Haynes. Get a multimeter or a continuity light

Well, I started from the begining this morning, checking connections, replacing the rotor and cap on the distributor. When I tried starting again, I hooked up the jumper cables to a running car (I ha

Charles A battery with a dead cell will crank a car but it may only have 9 volts, not enough to power a 12 volt electronic ignition and/or coil. I had a new battery that had a bad cell, it started th

Charles, I would guess that it is the Alternator!! The battery is used to start the car and help power lights, if your car dies when the battery is disconnected that means that it is running off the

I would expect that if the charging system is in order, the car should continue to run when the battery is disconnected.....unless thats only on cars with generators.....? I'd be checking the alterna

The battery provides storage, buffering, and continuity. You may be thinking only of its storage capability. You need the battery there to at least pass current. The first time my Sprite just dead st

I will attempt to charge it up this evening. The alternator belt seems tight, and the alternator clearly spins when the engine turns. I was last week getting a very faint glow on the ingition warning

Not true. I believe that the original post stated that the car died when the jumper cables were removed from the spridget battery. This could indicate that the spridget was running through the chargi

NOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooo This is a valid test on cars with GENERATORS only. You almost certainly will need an alternator if you disconnect the battery on a running car, especially if it is Lucas
