Try lubricating the cable before spending any money. If it still does it, the cable binding is most likely and I'd replace that 1st.

Could be the sheath in which the cable turns that is kinked/broken/frayed. Had that happen on my E-Type - the speedo bounced 20 mph all the time. Looked at the sheath and found it was coming apart. P

Ok I found my problem by process of elimination. I took the whole cable out with the sheath. Hooked it up to a drill and it ran smooth. I then hooked it up to the speedometer which I also took out an
