I'm not completely sure of the origin.  The authoritative Micheal Sedgwick
refers to it as a Vanguard engine.  I have also heard it was used in tractors,
from folks putting the TR series down.  My guess would be that it was a car
motor adpated both ways

Jans suggestions have some merit but one could argue that Alfa Romeo sedans and
sports share engines, and how affordable was the Ferrari engined Fiat (not very,
over here, but probably as cheap as chips in USA).  I was thinking of pre-war
Brit stuff like ERAs and Frazer Nashes but I don't know enough about them
