The participant was lucky and ended up with a bruised hand.

I think the natural reaction is to shield yourself (from the rapidly
approaching ground) by sticking your arm out. If you don't want to use a
window net, rolling your window up would probably provide some protection
(although I have never actually  proved this theory, thank God.)
