That's a smart idea to check the booster.  The test I've always heard, is 
to step on the brake pedal and then start the engine.  If the pedal moves
down when the engine starts, the booster is OK.

I know this is a really dump question,  but when you replaced the rear shoes
and drums, did you adjust the brake shoes?  If so, how?  I usually adjust
them until I can bearly rotate the drum.  Then back off a little.  Usually
if the wheel & tire is on the drum, it will rotate about one full revolution
when you try and spin the wheel.
