Thanks for all your pointers. I checked the compression last
night and it was 130 130 120 130 which is a hopefull sign for
the block and head being intact. I have pulled the water pump
and will replace it as a matter of principle as soon as I can
get out of the seminar I am in long enough to get down to
British Motor Sports and pick one up. I have the same experience
on water pumps but you can never tell. 

After I get the water pump in I will report progress.
