THe "tar-like substance" was actually "roofing felt" that is to say, tar
paper. Generally 30 pound. Over the years, the heat would melt it to a nice
tar-like consistency. You could use the roofing felt, or if you're not going
for originality, look for aviation insulation (plastic foam with an overlay
of metal foil.) I've also used closed-foam neoprene (wet suit material) which
looks just like the tar paper unless you touch it and as much better
insulating properties.
