Well, let's see.
 The Drivers handbook for the 1972 model year, in the running
instructions (page 26) says:  "it is not necessary to depress the cluthc
pedal during engagement or disengagement".
 It doesn't say DO NOT, only that it isn't necessary.  A bunch of
difference.

Could it be that between 1970 and 1972 the works changed their collective
mind?
Or (heaven forbid!) maybe the drivers manual isn't the definitive piece
of literature it is sometimes held out to be?
