Well, it was good to finally meet some of the other listers at Palo Alto.
I did the drive (held on Saturday) from Palo Alto to Half Moon Bay (via the
Santa Cruz mountains and in particular Sunset Blvd). I was driving alone, so
I tagged onto a TR6 and let them follow the directions, while I concentrated
on folloing the TR6. It got a little difficult to keep up at times and I did
not want to get too close going downhill (drum brakes!).
For those of you who (a couple of years ago when the topic came up on the
list) described Sunset Blvd as (one of) the best roads to drive an MG on in
the USA -- I can tell you that there are many, many miles of roads which are
just as much fun and with fantastic views to be found in North Wales.
Before setting out on Saturday, I discovered a broken spoke. British Wire
Wheels told me not to worry about this as long as the other spokes are OK,
but then, they have a vested interest in having my wheel fail and be in need
of a complete re-build. Anyone have any thoughts on replacing a single
spoke? It is an inner spoke in a 48-spoke wheel.
I met with the team from Practical Classics who were doing an article on the
Palo Alto drive and show (Phil Raby/MG World, are you reading this?).
On Sunday, I parked my MGA on the field and found the Moss trailer, (amongst
the Tr**mphs), asked about Kelvin and walked back to the MGs, where I met
Kelvin and others.
Terry Sanders' ("TATERRY") immaculate Arnolt TD was picked by Practical
Classics to be the "Editor's Choice" in a future edition.
Some interesting modified care there -- an E-Type with wild bodywork mods
and a 428 (?) corvette engine in it. A 'steath' spitfire (looks like a
regular spit, but a 328 (?) chevvy engine and drivetrain). A '57 MGA with a
toyota 2-litre engine and gearbox, modified bodywork at the front, but
still using drum brakes all round (it may go fast, but does it stop?).
Some interesting Lotuses there -- including an Elise (right hand drive, with
British plates), being driven temporarily by a Brit on a temporary job here.
