If you hear the solenoid click when you turn the key, the solenoid is
probably OK. The problem you describe is usually due to bad brushes or a
worn comutator. The brushes aren't always making good contact. If the
solenoid does NOT click every time, I would replace it first. (The rattly
starter probably has bad bushings.)
Take the first one to a good auto electric shop that has been in business for
a long time. These starters are used in all sorts of things and someone with
lots of experience will know all about it and can rebuild it to like new
condition. I have a guy near me in Jenkintown, PA who did mine and it is
like new.
BTW, every lister's good buddy Peter C. of World Wide Auto Parts probably has
NOS parts to rebuild both starters if want to try it yourself. It's not
rocket science but turning a comutator is best done with the proper
equipment. I'm sure Peter will walk you thru it.
