To replace the gaiters, there is another way that does not require
removing tie rod ends from the steering arms. It has been written up in
the Moss catalogue too, sometime. In essence, though--
Mark the tie rod locknut locations on the steering rack. Loosen the
nut, say, one flat to unlock it from tie rod end. Then, using a wrench
on the flat of the rack, unscrew it from tie rod end, keeping exact count
of the turns you made. This is not always easy, since wrenches slip and
you get distracted when the neighbors's cat walks across the car. With
the rod undone, remove the gaiter, being prepared for a mass of oil and
grease to fall out. Have a pan underneath. Clean up the area and
reinstall the gaiter. If you evert the large end, it will flip over onto
the rack housing fairly easily. This works better for me than trying to
twist and pry the thing on. Then you go and screw in the tie rod to the
tie rod end, trying to count the turns. When it is where you think it
should be, turn back the locknut and check that it locks at the spot you
marked. If it doesn't, turn the tie rod in or out as appropriate and
check again. Now that side is back to the alignment spec it had when
you started. Remember to put the oil in before you clamp up the little
clamps.
