The wooden wheel would probably break in your hands and/or against your
chest.  Parts of the wheel would travel forwards with you while some
sharp parts would be left in situ while you travelled forwards against them..

Wooden steering wheels are banned on racetracks here, even in our little
old 'slow' cars on the following basis:

ALL AUTOMOBILES SHALL, OF NECESSITY, IN ALL COMPETITIONS:

12. be fitted with steering wheels which do not incorporate components
made from wood, unless such a steering wheel is the retained original component.
