Wooden steering wheels are banned on racetracks here, even in our little
old 'slow' cars on the following basis:

There are many, many differences between race and street cars and it is because
we take many more compromises in consumer cars (right or wrong, for many
reasons). Standard gas tanks, things in the trunk, not wearing helmets and
simple lap and/or lap and shoulder belts are a few other things. I guess it
comes down to your own level of risk you are willing to take. I think if my
life was designed to be the least risk free I would not have bought the MG in
the begining and just stayed with the Sable and not even driven that. I also
would not have my current Job which is going to accidents for 22 years now
(among other things). I have a 16" walnut wheel on my street only car and would
not trade it for anything. I would still state that I think the instance of
people being hurt by wooden wheels is far less than those than from those hurt
"by wearing those damn seatbelts".
I am not trying to rant here, honest :-)
