>>>Question. How do you know when gas-filled dampers have leaked?

Gas-filled shocks do contain oil, so when they start leaking, oil will
weep out of them, just like any other shock. The reason they have gas
(nitrogen?), is to maintain the damper oil under extreme pressure so that
bubbles do not form in the oil under extreme conditions. When a regular
shock is overworked the oil gets hot and starts foaming, the gas pressure
is used to reduce the foaming effect.
