I have not had an engine sit "open" for this long, but for shorter
durations, even in dusty shops, I usually just blow off the surface dust
with an air hose, put clean oil in, run it for a short time, and then
change the oil and filter.  I don't like to use solvent on a motor that I
am not going to completely tear down.  Kerosene would not be bad, as it
still has some lubricating properties.  Anything more volatile than that
and you risk scoring bearings and valve guides on startup.
