John,

If you suspect low fluid levels in the diff, you shouldn't be driving the
car at all until you can get that filler plug off and determine levels by
shooting in a bit of gear oil in there until it starts to leak out of the
opening.  Since it's just on one side, I would suspect a problem with the
u-joint in the axle, first.  But it COULD be the diff...  Most of the majors
sell rebuilt diffs for about $700.
