That's not necessarily correct.  I've owned three Mk3's and every one of them
has the stabilizer mounted on the back of the speedometer, which is also where
the factory manual describes it's location.

  Hi James,
      Sorry - when I said regulator, I should have said stabiliser. It's a
  small device fitted somewhere around the back of the speedo. It's some time
  since I took apart a Spitfire so I can't remember the exact location. The
  voltage is stabilised (regulated, hence my wrong wording) to 10 volts,
which
  is what the fuel and temperature gauges require.
