Actually, all else being equal, the more tire
you put UNDER the rim, the better the grip
& handling....for that particular rim width.

And do not lose sight of the fact the stock suspension was specifically 
designed for the
relatively skinny tires of the day. Increase
the size of the footprint (especially side to side rather than fore/aft) and 
the handling
WILL "change" as will the tendency to
aquaplane in contaminated road conditions.

No big deal...just be "aware".
